If you pass through most Manhattan neighborhoods this month, chances are you’ll see a rainbow.

Pride & Profit?

You might see shoppers carrying a Steve Madden rainbow bag or catch the big Levi’s rainbow display in Times Square. There are banks with rainbow trim around their outdoor signs and pride flags everywhere you turn.

This morning when I walked into Dunkin’ Donuts, I was greeted with “sprinkled with pride,” the newest sugary treat placed next to a bunch of other (straight, I presume?) donuts.

At the risk of appearing ungrateful, I believe it’s important for those of us in the LGBTQ community to ask the obvious questions: is this pride or profit? Or could it possibly be both?

With Stonewall 50 and World Pride only weeks away, it seems everyone wants to jump on the LGBT bandwagon, or more appropriately, the queer float. This is not a new phenomenon. Corporate presence at Pride parades has been growing over the last decade as public acceptance of LGBT equality has…
